Are there relatively inexpensive ways an online retailer can defend against denial of service attacks?
I have been an online retailer since 2003. Lately, there have been several DDOS (distributed denial of service) attacks on my site (not sure if it's the IP or the domain name), but this always ends with the host telling me they're shutting my site down and I'll have to move to a new host... Reading about DDOS attacks online, there seems to be a growing trend, especially from China. I'm also reading about 'prevention' methods and there only appears to be one—to install some 'expensive' firewall type program that costs $200-$300/month... This is absurd since my hosting bill is less than $20/month! (Kind of like the bad guys beating you up and then wanting you to pay them to stop...) Anyway, my question is this—my registered business name, my bank account name, etc. are all the same as my domain name. When the site goes down, it means I don't have email service which is also connected to my other sites with different domain names. So do I just keep the domain name and email service and not the site with the domain name, or go through the headache of changing my business name, bank account, etc. —OR should I get a second name and have the original name point to the new domain name? I'd appreciate any feedback because I can't seem to find any info on this other than 'change my domain name'—but it's more than just a name, it's the name of the business. What would you do?
